Family history
The only child of his parents, Daylan Atlas was fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to grow up in one of the public relations camps where the Cardassians kept Bajorans 'for their own safety'. His mother died of poisoning from bad rations when he was 10.
Atlas' father remarried soon after to provide him with a mother and in a few years he also provided twin half-sisters, Eos and Eris. Unfortunately, the marriage didn't go well and the parents split up, each taking one of the girls. Eris came to live with Atlas and his father and Eos with her mother.
As soon as he was of age, Atlas was able to win an admissions spot in Starfleet Academy and left home, quickly forging a life for himself alone.
When the girls were seven and he was in his third year at the Academy, an attempt at reconciliation between Atlas' father and stepmother resulted in an accident that killed them both. He became the twins' guardian.
Unprepared, Atlas made many mistakes, but focused more and more on being a good pseudoparent to his baby sisters. He was even able to get them aboard the USS Pendragon, his first posting while he finished up his post-graduate command training. His move to the USS Gryphon and USS Georgetown brought them along, with the girls taking to the life of being Starfleet brats. Notorious pranksters, the girls took a dislike to his fiance, Sandra Ross, and accidentally walked in on them en flagrante delicto. Furious, and encouraged by his fiancee, Atlas sent his sisters to boarding school on Earth, hoping having a grounded life would help.
While Atlas' sense of duty and responsibility grew, his charges grew more reckless and irresponsible in thier school until he felt he had no choice but to split them up and place them in seperate schools at the end of their first year.
Atlas' relationship with his sisters degraded after that, and without their contact, he focused more and more on his work, suppressing his personal life in favor of duty.
Several years later, Atlas second attempt at marriage went through, but ended badly. His Vulcan bride divorced him and he withdrew even more in to his work.
As his personal life shrunk, Atlas' career grew, with him getting assigned to the USS Fuji as Second Officer and later Executive Officer on the Galaxy Class ship. His reputation as a dedicated and stable command officer got him choice assignments on Diplomatic and and Science vessels, but when he asked to go through the vetting process for his own command, he was told he needed tactical experience.
Able to occasionally keep in touch with his sister Eos, he learned that they had been stationed together on the USS Claymore (against the wishes of an Admiral who had sworn to make sure they never would be after their antics in the Academy). When Atlas applied for a transfer to a frontline tactical ship, he added their duty station to his list of preferred assignments.
