Family history
The Walkers were a Starfleet family until Lucas. Having lost his father and sister as a young teenager, he rebelled and outwardly refused to join Star Fleet.
When he was 17 years old his mother also died and the next two years were a somewhat bumpy time. He lived as a civilian aboard a rather unique Starfleet vessel where he and the crew struggled to integrate him into the team. There was a lot of tension and defiance in the beginning with many confrontations with the captain and he spent a more nights than he would have like in the brig.
He does have a somewhat adopted father figure but for the last 6 years they have not spoken and Lucas's whereabouts are unknown to him.

Education
By all means he was a bit of a child genius and as the son of an admiral he had all the ingredients he needed to nurture his intelligence to be an overachiever but he never quite became the apple in the eye of his mother. Behavioral difficulties at school, truancy and a myriad of run-ins with Starfleet security impeded his success in the real world and frustrated his mother. None-the-less she loved him and was proud no matter what he did. During their travels around the galaxy, Lucas put his intelligence towards learning of cultures and languages, quelling his mother's worries. He became fluent in additional 3 languages and could string a few phrases from a number of others.
Nonetheless he completed his secondary education and completed one year studying at a federation academy of science and technology before dropping out.
He eventually opted to study medicine having been inspired during his travels. He completed his primary medical degree, MBBS (Hons) Medicine & Surgery and subsequently went on to complete basic starfleet training whilst interning.
