Vaughn had what you could call a typical childhood. both his parents ran a small restaurant since before his birth (was a hand-down from his paternal grandfather), and it was assumed once he'd gotten being a teenager out of his system he would take his place in the business.
It was while he was preoccupied with being a teenager that he found himself on an ill-fated camping trip with friends. their shuttle had crashed, and almost none of them survived. He himself had sustained several injuries, not all of them having been properly healed until much later, and one who's evidence he explicitly chose to hang onto as a reminder.
It was after this event, and after spending several weeks in recovery to properly tend to the worst of his still existing injuries after his rescue, that he had made a decision. And on his 18th birthday, with the grudging support of his parents, he applied to Starfleet Academy with a focus on tactics and survival, and a minor in flight.

combination of public and private schooling as his parents could accommodate, some community college exposure, before electing to join the academy instead.
Medical profile
Several injuries that seemed to have gone too long before being attended to, resulting in a less than perfect healing patern. It would be noted that while they don't appear to be causing a problem at present, it should be monitored and, if at all possible, corrected. Vaughn has politely refused such correction to date.

A scar on the back of his right shoulder, sustained in a shuttle accident in his teens--his medical file will note he specifically requested it be left as is.
