Family history
Kelan and Carra Solaa first met while they were both studying for their doctorates at the University of Trill. They fell in love despite their opposite personalities. Kelan was a symbiologist, dealing exclusively with things pertaining to the unique Trill Symbiont and Carra, a geneticist. Both were involved in numerous genetic projects sponsored by the Trill Symbiosis Commission. Today, the Drs. Solaa hold high positions in the Commission, whose members are treated as celebrities on the Homeworld.
The Solaas have three daughters: Nadia, Rynia, and Jillian. Nadia was born first, 4 years after their marriage and was named after a Kelan's mother. Rynia followed next 5 years after Nadia, and was named after the ancient Trill goddess of the ocean, where she was born. Jillian followed 3 years after Rynia and was given the romanticized name of a beloved flower on Trill, the jilzan rose.
Rynia was born at the Solaa's ocean-side mansion in Nembree, Trill. Her first memory was of that purple sea and she has always loved the waters of Trill to this day. Her parents were incredibly wealthy, even before they obtained their offices in the Commission. The Nembree Mansion was their summer home and they also have a house in the Capitol.
Growing up with money was not easy for the Solaa girls. They spent more time with each other and with their live-in nanny, Telza, than with their parents. Rynia desperately craved parental attention and did everything she could to be noticed by them, negatively and positively. She was always in trouble and always being reprimanded by someone, a trait that has seemed to follow her throughout her life. However, she did excel in the sport of gymnastics and started her training at the age of 5 years old. By the time she was 16 she was chosen to represent Trill in the Galactic Olympic Games on it's female gymnastics team. However, she broke her back in a training accident before the Preliminaries and could not compete. She has not studied or practiced the sport since that incident and took up swimming instead.
The Dominion War was in full swing by the time she was in Secondary School at the prestigious (and expensive) Omani-Sanz All-Girls Preparatory Academy. Though while the war ranged on far away from Trill, Rynia and her friends spent their nights sneaking out and partying. Rynia's life was catalogued in the Trill tabloids, much to the frustration of her parents. She graduated a year after the Dominion War ended and took an incredible turn in her destiny.
Rynia was never slated to follow in her parents footsteps and become a scientist. She did not know what she wanted to do with her life but her parents made it clear that she was not to waste her life the way she had been doing during Secondary School. One day Rynia woke up and decided to apply for Starfleet Academy. No one expected her to seriously get an interview, including her parents, but miraculously she was. Rynia was intelligent and did well in school, despite her raucous nights, and was invited to take the entrance exam. She herself did not believe that she would actually get that far, but her curiousity was piqued and she went through with the exam. Her mother had gotten her into a design school and wanted her to become an architect or a clothing designer but when Rynia got accepted to Starfleet Academy she was thrilled. Her mother was not happy about her choice, which made Rynia want to go through with her career choice even more. Her father and sisters were excited for her and that fall she was enrolled as a first-year Cadet.
The girl was changed forever when she got to Starfleet Academy. No longer did she spend time partying, but instead filled her hours with study. She had many love interests but for the first time in her life she was not interested in a relationship, knowing that in 4 years she would be transfered lightyears away from anyone she was seeing. She studied psychology vigorously and even minored in Computer Operations because she was so interested in how things worked on a starship.
Tragedy struck when Rynia was a 1st year Cadet. Nadia, who was a shuttle designer at Utopia Plantia Fleetyards died suddenly from injuries sustained in a testing accident. Rynia almost dropped Starfleet Academy alltogether, her grief was so great, but eventually Jillian reminded her that Nadia always wanted to see her sister in a Starfleet uniform. She doubled her efforts and graduated a year early to forget the pain of losing her sister and to gain a new identity for herself.
Her first posting was on the USS Apache as an Operations crewmember. Rynia wanted a position as a Counselor, but the department was full on the Apache at the time of her posting. When it became open, Rynia joined the team as Head Counselor due to her personality and work ethic.
During her first year on the Apache, she met and fell in love with Dr. John Powers, a Joined Trill with an unusual name. Dr. Powers was the Chief Medical Officer on board the Apache and the two carried on a torrid love affair for two and-a-half years. He proposed and they were set to be married that coming spring, but Powers was kidnapped by Romulans. The crew of the Apache split up to find their missing crewman and the ordeal was particularly painful for Rynia. They recovered him after many long months but just as Rynia and Powers reunited, they were split by Starfleet Intelligence. Powers was taken into their custody and his whereabouts are unknown at this time.
A few weeks after Powers left, the crew had to report to Starfleet Headquarters for a hearing regarding the mess they had gotten themselves into. Rynia had been toying with the affections of the Science Department on the Apache for some time, as both the Chief Science Officer and his Junior Officer (then LtJG. William York) were trying to win her affections. A fiasco ensued and escalated due to the fact that Rynia had received an assignment to be the Executive Officer of the USS Sharikahr. She took it and escaped the emotional rollercoaster she left the two men on that ultimately resulted in one man’s death by suicide and another man severely broken-hearted.
The Sharikahr turned out to be nearly 3 months late to dock which left Rynia nothing to do but go back to Trill and rethink her choices. When the Sharikahr finally did dock and called for her, she declined the offer and stayed with her younger sister, Jillian, on Trill, where she took psychology refresher courses in preperation for her next assignment. During this time she rethought her career once again and considered quitting the Fleet even though she was recently promoted to full Lieutenant. She sorted out her life on Trill and waited for her next assignment.
The USS Tal-War was in need of a new Counselor and Rynia took the job with much excitement. She believed that she could start a new life on the Tal-War, not bearing to go back to the Apache and the life she led on that ship however much she felt at home there. However, Fate intervened and she found that the Science Officer on the Tal-War was none other than then Lieutenant William York, the man she was trying to forget. William had left the painful memories of the Apache behind as well, but mostly he was trying to move on from Rynia. Their first meeting was somewhat less than perfect, both were still hurting from the events of the past. Rynia was downright angry at William for blaming her for Tom's death, and William was upset that the one person he was avoiding came crashing back into his life again in the most distressing way.
Eventually, the two got back together and have been together since their reunion on the Tal-War. Their life has been relatively quiet (as quiet as a life in the stars could be) and they have both grown to love each other.
However, some interesting news reached Rynia while she was at a conference: she was pregnant. At first she took the news rather badly but eventually, she came to terms with it and broke the news to her boyfriend. They had just taken a big step and moved in together. They opted to be reassigned to the USS Arondight together and later to the USS Scimitar where they both have retained their current positions.
On 10904.27, Rynia gave birth to her first child, Aelia while on the USS Scimitar. She had an emergency Caesarian section and the child was born nearly 3 months prematurely for either a human or a Trill child. However, due to intervention by an unknown alien entity, her daughter survived and grew at a faster rate than any human or Trill child. She resided with the couple on the starship for a time, until both Rynia and William decided to take postings on Trill and to get married.
After Aelia almost died on board a starship the pair decided that raising a young infant on a starship was not what they wanted to do. William decided to take a job as a Chief of Genetic Research at the Trill Symbiosis Commission and he resigned his commission as a officer. The pair lived in Rynia's family home to raise their daughter but Rynia decided to pursue a post with Starfleet Medical on Trill doing psychological research and working to improve Starfleet counseling procedures.
Three years later, William went back to Starfleet to take a medical posting on the USS Seleya. Rynia stayed behind on Trill to take care of their daughter and they continued their relationship across the distance.
She missed the stars and she missed her husband and so she applied for a posting on the USS Seleya where here husband was also stationed.
